This night Vienna experienced its first kinda heavy-ish snowfall this winter. As a child, this would’ve delighted me. Once you own a car that you have to sweep free of about 30 centimetres of snow, however, the magic of the white stuff from above kinda dwindles. (At least it’s appropriately cold, so it’s the pulvery stuff rather than the heavy, wet stuff you can hardly get off any surfaces at all…)
What really pisses me off though is the way the city responds to the first real snow of every year. Namely too late and too little. Really. The weather forecast told us about today’s snowfall for days, and still in my neighbourhood most streets aren’t cleared at all. Which is ok when there is little traffic and the snow cover stays crisp and thick so the tyres can still get a good grip, but not so ok on the more frequented streets. Because there the snow turns to slush and shit happens. Like the now alomost compulsive first-snow tram/car-accident on the mainroad I just passed.
